Salsa Timing:
Learning to dance on time to the music will make salsa dancing far more enjoyable for you and your dance partner.  Salsa Dancing will feel just right!

Lets start by establishing that Salsa Music is written in 4/4 time.
One bar of music contains 4 beats.  The basic salsa step is perform within a phrase of music containing two bars of music with 4 beats each.

Salsa music is rule by the CLAVE!  (Two wooden strikers that reproduce the musical Clave pattern)

Below is a picture of the clave instrument and the orange numbers represent the beats the 2-3 Afro-cuban Clave pattern falls in relationship to the music.

As a Salsa Timing excercise, try counting aloud beats 1 thru 8 and perform your basic salsa step starting with the left foot on beat 1 for the men and starting with the right foot for the ladies.

Next, challange your self and try clapping the Clave pattern with your hands while counting aloud beats 1 thru 8.
 
Next, try performing your basic salsa step while you count 1 thru 8 aloud and clap with your hands the clave rhythm all at the same time!

Sure! It will take a little bit of practice but believe me once you master these exercises you will be on your way to becoming a truth Salsa Dancer!
